Protect Your Home From a Fire This Winter

BLUEFIELD (WVVA)- As the weather turns cold, families across the region turn to radiators, gas and electric heat, heat pumps and for some fire wood to stay warm.

Authorities say no matter what your choice is to heat your home, you need to remember a couple of rules.

Change the batteries in your fire and carbon monoxide detectors. If a fire was to start in your home a smoke detector could save your family and your house.

If you are using radiator heaters, Bluefield Firefighters say whatever you do, don't use an extension cord.

This Thursday, officials will be at Montcalm Elementary in Mercer County giving away smoke detectors to students to give to their parents.
