Historic building set for demolition, locals react

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- A historic building will be demolished, making way for a popular fast food joint to take over its spot on a busy intersection.

Beckley Feed and Hardware, off Route 16 and Route 3, is no more.  Reports say McDonald's is taking over the property.

Some locals are excited about the new restaurant.  It will be the only chain fast food in reasonable walking distance of the city's downtown.

Others like John Rock, are not completely sold.  He works nearby the old hardware store location. "Kind of mixed views on it," says Rock.  "They have a red light that has crashes at it all the time.  But it's good for business I guess.  It brings more to this area then it did before.  I guess it'll be good."

Meanwhile the sign and original documents from Beckley Feed and Hardware will be preserved at the Beckley Historic Landmark Commission.  The building has been in place since 1935 and is on the national historic registry.
