Area firefighters plan raffle to raise money for new fire engine

MATOAKA, W. Va (WVVA)-- A volunteer fire department is hoping to raise money for a new fire engine.

Firefighters in Matoaka are planning a big raffle to do just that.

It's set for September 14th, 2014.

10,000 total tickets are available, for a chance to win prizes worth a total value of $250,000. They include a check worth $25,000, several ATV's, a tool set, kitchenware and more.

Firefighters say they need to sell every ticket to raise the kind of money they'll need for the engine.

"The median age of our current fleet is roughly 22 years old," said Assistant Fire Chief John Sommers. "The economy, the lack of increase in funding for all fire departments, just doesn't leave us the ability to purchase those high-line items.

"It's a quarter of a million dollars," he added, "and that's without the equipment."

Tickets for the raffle are available now. They're $50 each.

To buy one, call the Matoaka volunteer fire department or visit www.matoakafirerescue.org.
