Historic Beckley hardware store to be demolished

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- A historic feed and hardware store in Beckley is slated to meet the wrecking ball soon.

The Charleston Gazette reports that Paramount Development Corp. plans to demolish the Beckley Feed and Hardware building and replace it with a McDonald's.

The Beckley Code Enforcement Department approved the site plans and demolition on Oct. 1.

The building was constructed in 1935 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001.

Austin Caperton has owned the building since 1998. The 62-year-old Caperton tells the newspaper that the business was successful. But he received an offer on the property and he decided to move on.

He has donated the store's sign, original blueprints and other documents to the Beckley Historic Landmarks Commission.
