UPDATE: Matoaka house fire considered suspicious, injures firefighter

Posted:

MATOAKA, W. Va (WVVA)--  Officials have ruled a fire injures a firefighter and destroys a home "suspicious."

It happened in Matoaka on Culvert Road around 7:45 Saturday evening.

Crews cleared the scene around 4 hours after they arrived.

Matoaka fire chief Steven Sommers said one firefighter was hurt when a nail punctured his shin while fighting the blaze. He was taken to Princeton Community Hospital for treatment.

Sommers added he believes the fire was not an accident. He said Saturday evening that the homeowners saw an explosion on their property, and then the house went up in flames. But the fire was burning so hot, Sommers said, that any evidence could have been destroyed.

A state fire marshal will handle the investigation from here.

The home is a total loss, said Sommers. Fire crews had difficulty getting their trucks up the road to the home because of a difficult bridge leading onto the property. Crews had to use portable pumps and drag their own hoses up to the home to begin putting out the blaze. They used a hearby stream to pump water.

But the good news-- everyone living in the house escaped without injury.
