Famous Mountaineer teaches area students to be tobacco free

GLADE SPRINGS, W. Va (WVVA)-- Students from all across our area heard an important message from a famous Mountaineer Saturday.

Former WVU football player Wes Lyons spoke at "RAZE", a tobacco prevention program held at the Glade Springs Resort.

"If you want to be a top athlete, if you want to be on top of whatever you want to do, you have to do your best," Lyons told WVVA. "And being tobacco free is one of the first steps to doing your best."

More than a hundred students came to attend seminars.

They learned ways to teach friends and classmates their tobacco-free message, and how staying away from drugs like that can help them get ahead in life.

"Tobacco usage affects everybody. Because you're around it constantly. When smoking it you get secondhand smoke which is just as dangerous as smoking a cigarette," said Jason Nichols, who attended Raze as Teen Advisory Council President.

Raze is a statewide organization for teens that's devoted to decreasing tobacco usage and deaths.
