    MONTCALM, W.Va. (AP) -- A barn demolition project in Mercer County has uncovered a 19th century log school. Brian Pigg discovered the hand-hewn logs at his barn's core while removing siding. The barn is located on Browning Lambert Mountain in the Montcalm area. Retired Montcalm High School history teacher Jack Johnson tells the Bluefield Daily Telegraphthat the log structure was once known as the Mullins School. FAYETTEVILLE, W.Va. (AP) -- Thrillseekers from across the globe are converging on Fayetteville for the annual Bridge Day festival.

Saturday's event is the 34th year for the Bridge Day festival. It is the one day a year that it's legal to jump off the 876-foot high span across the New River Gorge.

More than 80,000 people are expected to walk across the bridge. Rappellers also will make their way from a cat walk under the bridge to the water below.

More than 450 BASE jumpers also registered to leap off the bridge. The acronym BASE stands for the places from which jumpers usually leap: buildings, antennae, spans and earth.

Those who have signed up come from 8 countries and more than 40 states. The youngest is 20 years old and the oldest is 84.
