RICHLANDS (WVVA) - A Tazewell County man has been arrested after allegedly making threats to Richlands area schools.

Frankie Edward Smith of 421 Maple Lane in Richlands faces two counts of Threatening to Bomb or Burn a Public Building.

According to a release from the Richlands Police Department, warrants were obtained for Smith's arrest on Wednesday following an investigation into the alleged threats.

Lt. R.W. Brown of the Richlands P.D. adds that officers were not made aware of the alleged threats until after school had been dismissed on Wednesday.

The suspect was in custody before the start of school on Thursday.

Brown says that a plan was in place in case the suspect wasn't apprehended before the start of school to ensure the safety of students and faculty at the schools.

Smith was taken into custody without incident and is being held without bond at the Southwest Regional Jail in Tazewell, Va.

Police are not releasing information as to how the threats were received.

The investigation is ongoing.
