Princeton city council debates changing charter over residency requirements

Posted:

PRINCETON, W. Va (WVVA)-- Should certain city employees be required to live within city limits?

The Princeton City Council explored changing its charter to allow the city's manager and clerk to live outside that boundary. Currently they are required to reside within Princeton's limits.

Mayor Pat Wilson says no other city officials are bound to that same rule.

She told those gathered at the meeting that all this originated when the current city manager had problems finding housing within the limits that fit her needs.

"When we limit what they can do, we are limiting them," said Wilson.

But citizens challenging the proposed amendment say those serving the city should continue stay close.

"They need to be aware of the noises that happen at night. They need to be aware of the wonderful good things, the places we walk our dogs at night," said Sheila McMullin, who came out to oppose the proposed change.

Since the proposed amendment did have written objections filed against it, it has been tabled. No further action can be taken over the amendment as it's written, according to the Princeton City Attorney.
