Va.'s Barter Theatre adds $34M to local economy

ABINGDON, Va. (AP) -- A recent study shows that the Barter Theatre in Abingdon contributed $34 million to the local economy in 2012.

The study by Destination Services says the total includes more than $20 million in direct spending by theater visitors.

The Bristol Herald Courier reports that the theater's producing artistic director, Rick Rose, presented the study's findings to the Abingdon Town Council and the Washington County Board of Supervisors last week.

Rose said that the study indicates that 70 percent of the theater's visitors return.

Abingdon Convention and Visitor's Bureau director Kevin Costello says the study shows that the Barter Theater is an economic engine for tourism.
