UPDATE: Missing elderly woman found safe near Bluefield home

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - An elderly woman who went missing from her Bluefield home Wednesday morning has been found safely near the residence.

85-year-old Ethel Thompson, who family members say suffers from dementia, had wandered away from her home at 1201 Greenbrier Street in Bluefield around 4 a.m.

Bluefield Police say she was located near her home on Wayne Street shortly after 11 a.m.

Her daughter, Sharon Thompson, says she wants to make sure this never happens again. 

"It was awful, it really was," she said. "[When she was found] it was like a weight off my shoulders."

Sharon is considering purchasing tracking software like this for her mother, or even alarms to sound when the front door is opened to alert them if Ethel wanders again.

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - Authorities in Bluefield are searching for an elderly woman suffering from dementia who wandered away from her Bluefield home this morning.

Family members tell WVVA News that 85-year-old Ethel Thompson of 1201 Greenbrier Street in Bluefield wandered away from the home around 4 a.m.

She is wearing blue pinstripe pants and a blue coat. She may by wearing glasses, a blue scarf and be carrying a green cane.

The Bluefield Police are actively searching for Thompson. If you have any information on her whereabouts contact 911 or the Bluefield PD at 304-327-6101.
