Are patients receiving unnecessary treatments that drive up health care costs?

(WVVA) – A new study confirms most patients receive unnecessary treatments that drive up health care costs and don't prolong survival.

Radiation therapy is often used to control pain in cancer patients whose disease has spread to their bones. However, previous research has shown a single session of radiation provides just as much pain relief for terminal cancer patients as multiple sessions.

Now, new data shows only three-percent of patients in the study received just a single treatment and nearly half underwent more than ten treatments.

Researchers say single radiation treatments should become routine practice and save patients from unnecessary costs and discomfort.
