Mercer County man accused of trying to run over WV State Trooper

A Mercer County man is accused of attempted murder for allegedly trying to run over a West Virginia State Trooper with a stolen vehicle.  46-year old Richard Anthony Hart is also charged with grand larceny and obstructing.

He denies taking the vehicle.  Regarding the charges against him, he says,"Not guilty."

However, Investigators believe other wise.  They say Corporal Shrewsberry of the West Virginia State Police found Hart on Rich Creek Road standing by the stolen vehicle and  ignoring orders to show his hands.

"He jumped into stolen truck and started towards Corporal Shrewsberry, swerved at him in an attempt to hit him.  Corporal Shrewsberry was able to jump and get out of the way," says Sergeant D. W. Miller of the West Virginia State Police.

He says Hart later wrecked the vehicle and authorities found him hiding underneath the wreckage and arrested him without incident.

"I knew he had been drinking. I could smell the alcohol on him and it did appear that he was on something other than alcohol just by his actions and the way he looked," says Sergeant Miller.

Sergeant Miller says the incident shows the grim reality of a dangerous trend among law enforcement officers.

"It seems to be that we are encountering more and more violence with folks that we encounter on a daily basis," says Sergeant Miller.

Corporal Shrewsberry was not injured.

Bond for Hart was set at $50,000.
