FDA food inspectors furloughed: how does this affect you?

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) -- With the federal shutdown, food safety inspections are on hold.  About 45% of FDA employees have been sent home.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, that means 91% of imported seafood is not being inspected.  That goes the same for 50% of fruits and 20% of vegetables brought in from other countries, but consumed in the U.S.

There is some good news though.  Meat and poultry are continuing to be inspected through the UDSA.  Also, state agencies are continuing their inspections for now.

Local supermarkets tell WVVA it hasn't affected them too much yet.  They're careful to look over much of the product themselves.
