Miner killed at CONSOL mine in Northern Panhandle

MARSHALL COUNTY (WVVA) - A miner has died after suffering a head injury in an underground accident in West Virginia's Northern Panhandle.

The accident occurred at 12:49 p.m. Friday at the CONSOL Energy McElroy Mine in Marshall County, according to a release from the West Virginia Office of Miners' Health, Safety and Training.

Preliminary information indicates the miner suffered a head injury and died while en route to the hospital.

Inspectors from the WVOMHS&T were at the mine Friday afternoon and have begun an investigation.

Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin issued the following statement regarding the accident:

"It is a terrible tragedy when the dangers that can accompany mining result in the loss of life. This miner and his family remain in the prayers and thoughts of Joanne and I, just as they surely do with all West Virginians."
