Leaders plan to improve state during "WV Speaks Up"

Posted:

BECKLEY, W. Va (WVVA)-- Area and state leaders gathered at Tamarack Thursday in an effort to improve the state.

48 leaders including WV Secretary of State Natalie Tennant, Bill Raney, and local mayors spoke at the first ever "West Virginia Speaks Up".

It's a conference affiliated with the Rocket Boys Festival.

Each speaker presented ways to better West Virginia, from better communication to just practicing common courtesy.

"This is an obstacle we have," said Scott Hill, Rocket Boys Festival Director. "The reason we have 48 speakers is we are 48th in a lot of things. We hope to be better than that next year."

Michael Martin, Mayor of Mount Hope, said, "I think we need to be nicer to each other. We've gotten to a point in this country where we are terrible to each other. We can't compromise." He suggested the people of WV begin to work on the way they treat one another.

Each speech was recorded and will be released gradually over the next 48 weeks.
