Remembering Mercer County Commissioner Joe Coburn

PRINCETON (WVVA) -

A black ribbon is on the chair of Mercer County Commissioner Joe Coburn as a county is in mourning. Commissioner Coburn died Wednesday night after a long battle with cancer. Commissioner Gene Buckner is in his first term on county commission. He says he will always remember Coburn's vast wealth of knowledge that he used to help the residents of mercer county.

"He has extended his hands to help thousands of people in this county, and with his wealth of knowledge about how to get that done has made it easy for a lot of people in this county to live their life," says Commissioner Buckner.

Coburn served on several boards across Southern West Virginia in addition to being part of Mercer County Commission. The next county commission meeting is Tuesday.

"It will be somber and probably be a lot of emotion. I'm sure there will be people that will be here that knew Joe and come to pay their respects in that meeting, and we will sit and listen," says Commissioner Buckner.

He says commissioners will now pick a democrat from Coburn's district to finish his term, and that person will have the option of running for the seat in the general election.
