Woman charged with embezzling thousands from Tazewell Middle School

TAZEWELL (WVVA) - A Tazewell County woman is facing multiple charges after allegedly embezzling thousands of dollars from Tazewell Middle School.

Willie Kathy Hicks, also known as Kathy Keene, 53, of North Tazewell, was indicted Oct. 2 on 15 counts of embezzlement by public officer and one count of money laundering.

Authorities say since 2006, Hicks has taken thousands of dollars per year in funds from Tazewell Middle School.

Hicks was an employee during the time of alleged fraud.

At a Thursday news conference, Commonwealth Attorney Dennis Lee said his office was notified of the suspected embezzlement by an attorney representing the school board on May 19, 2013. The information was then turned over to the State Police.

On Wednesday, School Superintendent Dr. Michaelene Meyer said in a statement released to WVVA News that school officials alerted authorities immediately after the "potential irregularities" were discovered.

The investigation is ongoing.
