Mercer Co. Commissioner Joe Coburn dies

ATHENS (WVVA) - Longtime Mercer County public servant Joe Coburn has died, WVVA News has learned.

According to an administrator at the County Commission office, Coburn died at his home in Athens around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday after a lengthy battle with cancer.

Coburn had served five terms with the County Commission in 1972, 1977, 1997, 2002 and 2008.

Coburn also served Mercer County in many other ways: as a sheriff's deputy in the 1950s and 60s, a probation officer and as a member of more than a dozen boards including the Hatfield-McCoy Trail, Board of Health, Region ONe Planning and Development and the Airport Authority.

Coburn was 81 years old. He is survived by two daughters, one son and several grandchildren.

Funeral arrangements are unknown at this time.
