BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - There's 2,339 employees in the West Virginia National Guard. On Tuesday, 1,150 employees were sent home.

The affected employees arrived to work to find out that the ‘Pay Our Military Act' does not cover the majority of the National Guard even though they are employees of the military.

The affected workers are civilians who drill on weekends mostly.

2nd Lt. Stacy Gault says the readiness of the Guard to respond to emergencies could be impacted by the shutdown.

Gault said the Guard will do its best to maintain readiness with the staff available, but more layoffs could come if the government shutdown persists.
