Rahall: Academy Day event scheduled for Beckley canceled due to shutdown

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall (D-W.Va.) Wednesday announced that, due to the Federal government shutdown, the Academy Day scheduled for Saturday, October 5, in Huntington and Beckley, would be postponed.  The events will be rescheduled at a later date.

"The U.S. Service Academies had planned to send representatives to Academy Day, but their hands are tied because of the government shutdown.  Once the budget standoff ends, we will reschedule Academy Day," said Rahall.

"In the past, academies have been able to send student representatives, who are impressive and valuable resources to our high school hopefuls.  Unfortunately, due to the government shutdown, some of the academies are unable to send representatives at this time.  I hope cooler, more mature heads will prevail sooner rather than later in Washington," said Rahall.

"College planning shouldn't have to be put on hold just because of a game of political point-scoring going on in Congress.  That kind of gamesmanship should be reserved for the gridiron, but, apparently, even the Army-Navy matchup may not happen thanks to the scrapping occurring within the Majority Party in the House," said Rahall.

"Getting into a U.S. Service Academy is difficult and I want to be sure our young people have every opportunity to compete for an academic opportunity of a lifetime, which is why we will reschedule Service Academy Day as quickly as possible.  If students have questions about attending an academy in the interim, they are welcome to contact my office," said Rahall.
