WV National Guard to be affected by government shutdown

CHARLESTON, W. Va (WVVA)-- Of the many organizations affected by the looming shutdown-- the West Virginia National Guard.

We spoke with Major General James Hoyer by phone. He says for the Southern West Virginia men and women who serve as dual-status federal technicians, furloughs are likely.

He says many of these people fill roles as clerks or pilots, or they maintain equipment needed to respond to disasters. Losing them, even temporarily, could impact the national guard's response time when called upon.

He added that the furloughed staff and their families would lose vital income.

"It's just not right," he said. "It's demoralizing to these men and women who stepped up and served their country and their state... And this is how we repay them? By laying them off? Because we can't agree on how to fund the government?"
