Rockefeller: Government being held 'hostage'

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Senator Jay Rockefeller today released the following statement:

"The House Republicans are on the verge of shutting down government services to millions of Americans and putting 95 percent of our government employees out of work, all because of petty partisanship. Fortunately, we've been able to protect pay for our troops, who should never have to face such personal uncertainty, but the House needs to stop playing games with the economy and the American people.

"We all know that if the full House of Representative were given the chance to vote on a straight funding bill – without any political add-ons – it would pass with a strong bipartisan majority.  I would hope West Virginia's Republican representatives would stand firm in demanding that their leadership give them a chance to cast that basic vote and avoid shutting down our government.

"The Affordable Care Act is the law of the land. It passed both chambers of Congress and it was signed into law by the President. It was upheld by the Supreme Court and it has withstood countless legislative challenges. Yet here we are, holding our government hostage to yet another challenge that is destined to fail. That is no way to govern and uphold the obligations entrusted to us by the American people."
