'Bible in the Schools' program receives donation

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - Two Mercer County schools received a big donation to help out with their Bible in the Schools program.

Montcalm and Whitethorn Elementary were chosen to each receive a $2,900 donation.

The money will help fund the salaries of their bible teachers.

The money was donated by Prosperity United Methodist Church in Montcalm, which recently had to close its doors and decided to donate what money they had in their account to the two schools.

"The reason we wanted to share the knowledge Prosperity was giving this money to the schools was to encourage other churches and individuals to give money to them as well so we can keep the program going," said Joanna Hess with the Whitethorn PTO.

"We sure do appreciate these folks contributing this money to us because it is hard for us as a small school to help raise funds and contribute the kind of money they need to pay those salaries because they are paying those salaries so it's hard for a small school to come up with," Whitethorn Principal Greg Furrow added.

The bible teachers come in at least once a week to teach a class to first through eighth graders in Mercer County schools.
