Va. developing identity database of residents

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- Virginia is developing an electronic identity authentication system for state agencies that will contain residents' driver's license numbers, addresses and other personal information.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that the Department of Social Services will be the first agency to use the new Commonwealth Authentication System.

State officials say the system will help state agencies uncover fraud and make it easier for residents to do business with the state electronically.

But the e-ID initiative is raising questions about privacy and security.

The executive director of Richmond's technology council, Robby Demeria, says anything that's made more accessible and efficient for the user is at risk of an attack.

American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia executive director Claire Guthrie Gasta±aga says the system will make it easier to compromise privacy.
