UPDATE: 51 school employees laid off in Buchanan County

GRUNDY (WVVA) - More than 50 employees of Buchanan County Schools have been laid off due to budget issues.

The Central Office of Buchanan County Schools confirmed to WVVA News that the 51 individuals were notified of their termination via letter at the end of the school day Monday.

Those terminated include teachers, aides and custodians. Ten of the 11 schools in the district were affected.

An office spokesperson said the decision to lay off the employees was made during a special school board meeting held last Thursday. The spokesperson said the decision was made due to a lack of funding in the school system's budget.

Larry Ashby, Division Superintendent of Buchanan County Schools, said additional funding will be sought to bring the affected employees back "as quickly and rapidly as possible."

Following is the full statement from Ashby:

"I sincerely regret we had to lay anyone off.  It's never been my objective whatsoever as superintendent for anyone to lose their job.  I will be seeking additional funding from the board of supervisors and other sources to bring these people back on board as quickly and rapidly as possible.  I understand the hardships layoffs create on families and I do not want to see anyone suffer as a result of this.  I have sincerely anguished over this the last several days."
