Mock inmate escape help builds teamwork among first responders

BLUEFIELD, Va. (WVVA) -- The Graham Recreational Park was on full scale "emergency mode" mid-day Tuesday for a drill between Pocahontas State Correctional Center Staff, local law enforcement, EMS and other agencies.

The drill was designed to test the response time and cooperation between all the agencies.

The mock scenario revolved around a correctional center van crash and inmate escape.

When the inmates wouldn't return, law enforcement fired a single shot to one of the inmates.

The end of the story goes that the inmates on the bus were members of rival gangs.

"Hopefully we'll learn what we can do better," says Patricia Lockhart, an institutional safety officer.  "This is all just a learning experience.  Nothing's perfect, of course, but if we can learn what we're doing wrong and fix it, we can ensure that we have the public's safety."

Next year, they hope to add another element, transporting people to the hospital.
