BLUEFIELD (WVVA)- It was a busy evening at the Trinity United Methodist Church for an event called "Blessings in a Backpack".

The goal was to pack up donated food items to be distributed to elementary school students in need.

The food was donated by community members as well as Grant's Supermarket and Food City.

This event is part of a program implemented throughout many cities nationwide, and Program Coordinator Betsey Shaw helped bring the program to Bluefield in order to make a difference in children's lives.

School officials are happy about the way this event has supported local children. Schools are able to provide at least two hot meals during the week, but on the weekends, a meal is not always guaranteed.

Blessings in a Backpack started distributing meals to 50 children in 2012. That number has since tripled to 150.

The food packaged during the event will be distributed to the children starting this Friday.

Organizers say they want this to be an annual event and need your help to make that happen.

For information on how to donate, you can contact Susan Reckter at 304-308-0996.
