BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) -- Virginia Tech researchers are conducting a study aimed at reducing accidents on a fog-prone stretch of Interstate 77.

The Roanoke Times reports that the study will determine the ideal brightness and color for new variable speed limit signs. The Department of Transportation plans to install the signs between Fancy Gap and the North Carolina border.

The signs can be quickly changed to drop the speed limit when visibility is reduced.

Currently, there's only one electronic message board in each direction near the fog-prone area to warn motorists.

The most recent accident occurred Saturday when an Ohio man was killed in a six-vehicle crash. On March 31, three people were killed and 25 were injured in a 95-vehicloe pileup.
