Tennant campaign has fundraising catch-up to do

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- Democratic U.S. Senate hopeful Natalie Tennant has some catching up to do in the fundraising fight with her Republican rival.

Campaign finance reports show Republican U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito had $2.8 million in her U.S. Senate campaign account months before Tennant ever stepped forward to join the race.

Tennant accounted her candidacy on Tuesday. Tennant and Capito are vying to replace retiring U.S. Sen. Jay Rockefeller.

Capito announced her candidacy last November. The most recent Federal Election Commission report available shows Capito had also spent more than $400,000 on her campaign through the end of June.

Candidates must file their next FEC fundraising report in October. Tennant's campaign says it is committed to running an aggressive, well-funded campaign.
