Students and police team up to teach safety

TAZEWELL, Va (WVVA)-- Police in Virginia are working with students to spread a message that could save lives.

The statewide Youths of Virginia Speak Out program is at work in Tazewell County, putting Tazewell police together with students to promote vehicle safety.

Through the "Save Your Tail-gate, Buckle-Up" challenge that runs through October 11th, Police Explorer students in Tazewell High and Middle schools are teaching others what the law already mandates-- buckle up.

"I think if adults hear children helping us do this, helping promote wearing seatbelts, that adults will be more aware," said Summer Hess, a school resource officer at Tazewell Middle School.

She added that another goal is that children's voices, although they may be small, could pack a powerful punch.

"[Maybe adults will say] 'Oh, this kid is wearing a seat belt? Maybe I should be too.'" she said.

The Police Explorers also do other volunteer work throughout their communities.
