Schools battle truancy across the Two Virginias

BLUEFIELD, Va (WVVA)-- Many school officials tell WVVA they won't overlook truancy anymore.

Mercer County Schools team up with the court system to handle excessive truancy.

In Greenbrier County, a program pairs a school probation officer with at-risk students.

In Virginia, state and county rules apply to truant students. But many believe more should be done.

"I think collaboration between everybody's behalf," said Graham Middle School principal Lee Salyers. Between the school division, between the court division, between the parents and the court division... We all need to take the time to work something out."

School officials tell us the stakes are higher after graduation, and a great way they can help students succeed -- is keeping them in class.
