Nurses: it's time for a flu shot

BLUEFIELD, W. V a (WVVA)-- Think it's too early for a flu shot? Nurses say, think again.

Summer may not be over yet, but health officials say it's once again time to think about influenza.

The flu, a highly contagious illness that can keep you in bed for weeks, is particularly hard on infants and the elderly.

Flu season began this month... And before it peaks this winter public health nurses say you should get your shot out of the way now.

"It's not too early," said Sandie Davis, Public Health Nurse at Mercer County's Health Department. "It takes two weeks for the vaccine to be fully effective. We would like everyone to be fully vaccinated in September, that way before flu season comes full force, you've already gotten your vaccine."

Sandie says the Mercer County Health Department has already given an estimated 300 shots-- and is prepared to give thousands.
