UPDATE: McDowell school cuts ribbon on new fitness center

WAR (WVVA) - Dignitaries joined students and faculty at one McDowell County school Wednesday to officially open its brand-new state-of-the-art fitness center.

the 'Live Positively Fitness Center' at Southside K-8 school in War was made possible by the National Foundation for Governors' Fitness Councils.

According to the Associated Press, priority was given to schools with a high percentage of participation in free and reduced-price meal programs; those with a significant proportion of students considered to be overweight or obese compared to the state average; and schools demonstrating a robust plan for using the equipment.

Foundation chairman Jake Steinfeld -- of "Body by Jake" fame -- joined W.Va. Gov. Earl Ray Tomblin, and other state and local leaders at Wednesday's ribbon cutting.

"Governor Tomblin immediately jumped on board and embraced our vision of building a nation with the fittest kids in the world - one school at a time," Steinfeld said. "He recognizes how important healthy kids are to the future of this great state." said Steinfeld, according to a news release.  "The leaders of this school understand the value of bringing innovative fitness ideas to their students and it's paid off.  This new fitness center will provide generations of students with the necessary tools to make physical fitness activities part their daily routine."

The facility has been named in honor of late War Mayor Tom Hatcher.

Stratton Elementary in Beckley is also a recipient of new fitness equipment. The third school was Wheeling's Bridge Street Middle.
