BECKLEY (WVVA) - West Virginia's Secretary of State has officially thrown her hat into the U.S. Senate ring.

Natalie Tennant announced Tuesday morning at Tamarack in Beckley that she would be pursuing the Democrat nomination in 2014 for the Senate seat that will be vacated by Sen. Jay Rockefeller.

Rockefeller announced last year that he would not be seeking re-election.

Current U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va., has also announced her intentions to pursue the seat.

Capito's camp wasted little time releasing a statement Tuesday morning, calling Tennant "West Virginia's biggest supporter of ... President Obama's entire extreme agenda."

Also officially filed to run in the 2014 U.S. Senate race, according to the Secretary of State's website, are: Sheirl Fletcher (D) of Morgantown; David S. Harless (D) of Charleston; Phil Hudok (Constitution) of Huttonsville; Scott "Cody" Regan (R) of Salt Rock; Martin Staunton (non partisan) of Beckley; Edwin Ray Vanover (R) of Bluefield and David Wamsley (D) of Williamstown.

CHARLESTON (WVVA) - In an email issued Monday evening, Natalie Tennant confirmed that she will announce her candidacy for the US Senate seat to be vacated by Sen. Jay Rockefeller.

Tennant will formally make the announcement at Tamarack in Beckley at 9:30 a.m. -- the first of three scheduled appearances in the Mountain State.

The release from Tennant reads:

"I am proud to let you know that tomorrow I will be formally announcing my candidacy for the United States Senate. My decision to run has come after hearing from citizens all across our state who are concerned about the nation's direction, intense discussion with my family and many prayers.

I believe that West Virginia values are what the country needs. And, I believe that West Virginians still need a senator who works as hard as they do.

I know I can bring new ideas to Washington and a willingness to work across the aisle for common-sense solutions to get our nation going in the right direction. I see a future built on our values of who we are as West Virginians – our work ethic, our ingenuity and our service to our country.

I know how to fight for West Virginia. I know how to be heard. I know how to win."

Tennant is also to appear in Charleston and Morgantown.

Her announcement sets up a potential showdown with Republican Shelley Moore-Capito, who also intends to run for the seat previously held by Rockefeller, who will not be seeking another term in 2014.

----

West Virginia Secretary of State Natalie Tennant tells WVVA News she will be at Tamarack Tuesday morning.

The news comes as Politico and other news organizations are reporting that Tennant intends to run for the U.S. Senate in 2014.

Senator Jay Rockefeller is not seeking re-election.

Republican Congresswoman Shelley Moore-Capito has also said she will run.

A former television news anchor and reporter, Tennant is in her second term as West Virginia Secretary of State.

In 2011 she had an unsuccessful gubernatorial run.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee seems not worried about Tennant's candidacy, calling her a "cookie-cutter liberal".
