Newest mine safety technology on display at Bluefield Coal Show

Brushfork, W. Va (WVVA)-- Mining companies continue to look for the safest technology out there, while staying on the cutting edge of the industry.

On display at the Bluefield Coal Show-- new equipment that could detect unsafe conditions faster and potentially save lives.

Reps from several companies say their technology can keep miners safer than ever.

Delta Electric's new atmospheric monitoring system senses air flow drops and harmful gasses instantly, sending live information to dispatchers who can then call for help.

And the PBE Group's sensors alert drivers operating heavy machinery of nearby men or other equipment so they can avoid collisions.

Miners touring the show tell us that's going to make a difference.

"It's a really good feeling to me personally," said Jonathan Walters, a miner at Cliffs Natural Resources. "I mean I have a wife and it's good to go home and see her. But it's also good that I now my guys are safe and they can work safe and go home every shift."

He added, "We're a really gassy mine so gas monitoring is really important to us."

Walkers says he and other miners can take ideas like these from the show back to their managers.
