Local boy ranks nationally in rocket competition

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- The local winner of the Rocket Boys Festival rocket competition is ranked in the top ten nationally and getting a big prize.

Aidan Deighan, 11, of Beckley, shot a homemade rocket at least 100 feet in the air during last year's festival.  His rocket landed just over 20 feet from its original post.  That measurement won him a sixth place ranking in the country and a trip to space camp in Huntsville, Alabama.

At space camp, he'll be shooting off another rocket at Homer Hickam Field.

"I think that West Virginia doesn't really get a lot of attention, so I'm thinking the fact that I won this thing to a national level, I feel like I'm doing something for the state," says Deighan.

"We need the next generation of scientists," says Scott Hill with the Rocket Boys Festival.  "We need our students and our children to wonder why because if we stop wondering how it works, we will stop being able to make it work."

If you'd like a crack at the same prize, the deadline for this year is Friday.  You can sign up at http://rocketboysfestival.com/2013_aiming_high_rocket_launch_contest.
