13,000 Va. state workers' personal info disclosed

ROANOKE, Va. (AP) -- Virginia officials are working to improve security after 13,000 state employees' personal information was mistakenly sent to 11 state human resource and payroll workers.

The Roanoke Times reports that the Virginia Department of Human Resource Management announced the disclosure in a statement.

Department spokeswoman Ann Waring says in the statement that Conexis inadvertently sent the personal information of flexible spending account participants to 11 human resources and payroll workers. Conexis is a subcontractor for Anthem.

Conexis notified the department about the disclosure. The information included employees' Social Security numbers.

Waring says the human resources and payroll employees are authorized to receive agency and location-specific employee data. But they received the entire participant list.

She says Anthem and Conexis will provide free access to credit monitoring and identity theft services.
