Bluefield Elks honor local first responders to commemorate 9/11

BLUEFIELD, W.Va (WVVA) -- The Bluefield Elks held their twelfth annual appreciation dinner for local first responders on Sunday in honor of the upcoming September 11th anniversary this week.

Police, firefighters and EMTs from all over Mercer County were in attendance.

Over the past 12 years, the event has grown from all small picnic to a banquet of sorts, complete with a color guard, speeches and 9/11 video tributes.

Elks and first responders both say a serious event like the 9/11 attacks can happen anywhere.  First responders everywhere risk their lives each day on the job.

"It could happen here," says Joseph George, a firefighter.  "So it just keeps you on your toes at all times of what could and may happen."

"Most people when they see danger or hear something that's dangerous they run away. First responders run toward the danger," says Robert Stevens of the Bluefield Elks.  "That's why we've set this day aside. We want them to know that this community really appreciates what they do for us."
