McDowell community gathers around 4 children at Pull for Hope

WELCH, W. Va (WVVA)-- Athletes from many states including Michigan, Florida, and even from McDowell County West Virginia pull a fire truck nearly two miles at the "Pull for Hope, Walk for Christ" event in Welch.

The fire truck is 61,000 pounds, and many of the athletes trained for the pull.

It's all to raise as much money as possible for 4 sick children, battling various health conditions-- London, Jeremiah, Phillip, and Kennedi.

Jeremiah's dad TJ Vance tells WVVA this pull helps them emotionally as well as financially.

"The heart that these people have," he said. "[It's so good.] It gives us somebody to talk to. It gives us somebody to pray with. I know now that we can rely on other people."

The Ministers of Fire motorcycle group also came to the event, handing out crosses and asking the crowd to carry them as the athletes pulled their load. The event, very religious in nature, was also meant to show the love of God.

Michael Brooks, one of the pullers, said, "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. And I can honestly tell you I couldn't do this without the Lord. It's tough."

At the start of the event, the Pull had raised $5200. But that's only half of their $10,000 goal.

If you missed the pull but would like to donate to the cause, they are raising money until October 1. You can go to any MCNB bank and make a donation to the Pull for Hope 2013 account. All funds go directly to the children's families to help offset medical costs.
