BECKLEY, W. Va (WVVA)-- Some Raleigh County firefighters return home after going out West to battle some bigger blazes.

Robert Donelow, a firefighter in Beckley, as well as several other men from the Mount Hope Fire Department are back from fighting wildfires out in Montana.

Donelow traveled in a group of firefighters from many other states, digging fire lines along hillsides and keeping the flames from destroying even more land.

He says the wildfires out west can kick up quickly, and spread rapidly.

"One particular fire, we actually were switching fires, going to another fire when we had to stop for a lightning strike. [It was a] 5-acre fire behind some residences. We were there for two days-- the homeowner met us every day at the bottom of the hill with some high fives," he said.

Robert added it was nice to feel appreciated by Montana residents, and the hard work was well worth it.

He hopes to make another trip like this again someday.
