Bluefield FD gets new life-saving equipment

BLUEFIELD (WVVA) - The Bluefield, W.Va., Fire Department has obtained new equipment that will help cut their response times for car accidents.

These new extrication tools will cut the time for extricating someone from a vehicle from 30 minutes to between 5-10 minutes.

The cutting-edge equipment has the power to cut through all types of metals.

The department obtained the equipment through an assistant firefighters grant and firefighters say they are fortunate to have the new tools.

"Our old equipment it's about 10 years old. It's electrical. They don't really cut all the new exotic metal that's out," said firefighter Justin Lucas. "It's lost a little bit over the years and it's not feasible anymore for us."

The department will have training sessions with the equipment so each firefighter is fully prepared to use it.
