HINTON (WVVA) - A Hinton man is behind bars after allegedly telling co-workers at McDonald's he had planned to kill everyone at the restaurant.

Ronald Bentonray Atwell, 26, was charged with threats of a terrorist act after police learned of the alleged threats, according to a news release from the Hinton Police Department.

Police were called to the restaurant Wednesday and advised by the manager that Atwell had told co-workers two days earlier that he was going to come into the restaurant on Sept. 4 and shoot everyone with an assault rifle, the release states.

Atwell allegedly further told co-workers to call in sick if they didn't want to be killed.

"Once we learned of the incident, I immediately notified Prosecuting Attorney Amy Mann and advised her of the situation," said Police Chief Derek Snavely. "Together we perceived the threat to be credible based upon multiple interviews and decided it was in the best interest of public safety to act quickly on the matter and make an immediate arrest.

Atwell is currently being held without bond at Southern Regional Jail.

"You hear of the situations like this all over the country and never expect something to happen in your area," Snavely added. "I'd like to think today we possibly prevented a tragedy."
