A Maryland man and a Mercer County resident have been sentenced on federal charges stemming from a crackdown on prescription drug trafficking in southern West Virginia.

U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin said Wednesday that 71-year-old Tyler Thorpe of Bluefield received more than four years in prison for distributing the painkiller Dilaudid. Thorpe pleaded guilty in April.

Goodwin says 31-year-old Robert J. Fleek Jr. of Baltimore received a two-and-a-half year sentence for distributing Dilaudid and another drug that's used to help people overcome opioid addiction. Fleek also pleaded guilty in April.

U.S. District Judge David A. Faber sentenced both men on Tuesday.

The cases are the latest resulting from the Bluefield Pill Initiative. Launched in 2011, it targets prescription drug trafficking in Mercer, McDowell and Wyoming counties.
