Driver, student transported after bus crash

BLUEFIELD Va. (WVVA) - A driver and student were taken to the hospital with minor injuries after an accident involving a school bus Tuesday morning.

The crash occurred on Leatherwood Lane, near the Route 460 intersection around 7 a.m.

K9 Patrol Officer T.W. Carroll with the Bluefield, Virginia Police Department tells WVVA a man driving a van was coming off West Cumberland Road, when he failed to yield and struck the school bus on the side by the door.

There were 9 students on the bus, around 12 years of age.

Police cited the van's driver for failure to yield, which is a reckless driving charge.

One student was taken to the hospital for observation, and then released.

The bus driver was also taken to the hospital after officials suspected glass from the bus door went into their eyes.

Carroll said the van had extensive damage and the bus was damaged where the door is located.

Bluefield Virginia Police and Fire crews responded, as well as Bluefield West and Bluefield VA ambulances.

This was one of four accidents Tuesday in Bluefield, Va., as of 3 p.m., said Carroll.
