UPDATE: 2-year-old killed in Southwest Va. apartment fire

MARION Va. (WVVA) - A devastating apartment fire in Southwest Virginia has claimed the life of a toddler and displaced more than two dozen residents, according to multiple media reports.

Ken Heath, Public Information Officer with the town of Marion, tells WVVA News that a two-year-girl died in the blaze at Country Club Crossings Apartments. The blaze began around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

The girl's mother was transported to a nearby hospital, then flown to Johnson City, Heath said. Her condition is unknown.

Twenty-five residents have been displaced from eight apartments affected by the fire.

Multiple fire crews including Marion, Chilhowie, Atkins and Adwolfe battled the blaze.

Smyth County Emergency Management and the Red Cross are also responding to the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.


MARION (WVVA) - Multiple crews are currently battling a fire at Country Club Crossings apartments in Marion, Va.

Authorities say the call came in at 10:23 a.m. Three injuries have been reported.

Crews from Chilhowie, Atkins and Adwolfe were assisting the Marion Fire Department.
