Amateur golf legend William Campbell dies

Record-setting amateur golfer William C. Campbell has died in West Virginia. He was 90.

The West Virginia Golf Association said Campbell died Friday at his home in Lewisburg. The cause of death was not disclosed.

Campbell played in 37 U.S. Amateur Championships, including a record 33 in a row, and won the title in 1964. He also won two U.S. Senior Amateur titles and was undefeated in eight Walker Cup matches. He won a record 15 West Virginia Amateur Championship titles.

In 1956, Campbell received the U.S. Golf Association's highest honor, the Bob Jones Award for Distinguished Sportsmanship. He is a member of the PGA Hall of Fame, World Golf Hall of Fame and West Virginia Golf Hall of Fame.

Campbell was a Princeton graduate and World War II veteran.
