Seriousness of mental health care for veterans discussed

BECKLEY (WVVA) -- Community members are discussing ways to better address mental health issues amongst veterans.

They say veterans are at risk for a multitude of problems when they return to civilian life from post traumatic stress disorder and depression, to relationship problems.

The Beckley Veterans Affairs Hospital hosted their first Mental Health Summit Thursday afternoon.  It was for veterans, health professionals and others hoping to begin conversations on how to bridge some gaps in mental health care.

"One potential discussion point that might come up are services to homeless veterans and specifically housing our homeless veterans and sustaining them in safe, appropriate housing.  That's an area of concern across the VA," says Anna Verschoore, chief of mental health services.

VA staff hope to take the info generated from Thursday's conversations and form strategies to better serve their veterans.
