Washington, D.C. -

U.S. Rep. Nick Rahall, along with Senators Jay Rockefeller and Joe Manchin (all D-W.Va.), Wednesday announced federal funding for the City of Princeton Police Department to enhance the Detective Bureau's ability to serve and protect the community.

"This Federal funding is good news for the Princeton Police Department and the community it serves and will help to address a pressing law enforcement need," said Rahall. "Our State's police departments know the importance of Byrne Grants and have done a lot of good in using those funds to strengthen crime control and prevention in our communities.  As budget constraints tighten in the Congress, I will continue to work to ensure that law enforcement and public safety programs that our communities need and want are not undercut."

"West Virginia's local law enforcement officers work diligently to prevent crimes that threaten the safety and well-being of our communities," said Rockefeller, who has consistently supported funding for the Byrne JAG grant program. "The Princeton Police Department has proved time and again their incredible dedication to public safety. This award will give them many more necessary resources to continue their important work."

"It is so important to invest in our state police to make sure they have the necessary resources and tools to protect our local residents," Manchin said. "I'm pleased to announce that this grant will help our crime-fighting efforts and get violent criminals off the streets. This is a commonsense investment and partnership between the state and federal government to improve the quality of life for all West Virginians."

The City of Princeton will receive a $10,240 grant to purchase a new unmarked police cruiser. The funding was awarded by the U.S. Department of Justice through the FY 2013 Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant Program, which provides funding to state and local governments to support a broad range of crime control and prevention activities.  Grant funds can be used for state and local initiatives, technical assistance, training, personnel, equipment, supplies, contractual support, and information systems.
