Corps' releases promise big Gauley River season

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) -- West Virginia's Gauley River will have more whitewater rafting days and higher volumes of water this year, thanks to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
Its schedule calls for 24 weekend releases from Summersville Lake instead of the usual 22 in September and October, plus nine midweek releases. And six of those will be at higher levels than normal.

The Charleston Gazette says the flows will be higher because the corps needs to inspect the outlet structures of Summersville Dam. That means they need to drain off more water.

Dave Arnold of Adventures on the Gorge says that's great for business and for tourists, who can stay longer and run the river midweek when there are fewer people on it.
